Munduk & Bedugul travel guide
Munduk & Bedugul: cool highlands, lake temples and hidden waterfalls.
Munduk and Bedugul are Bali's cool central highlands, a world away from the beaches. Come for the Ulun Danu Beratan lake temple, the twin lakes of Buyan and Tamblingan, forest waterfalls and clove plantations. Stay at least one night if you can, because the mornings up here are the best part.

Things to do in Munduk & Bedugul.
-
See Ulun Danu Beratan at first light
This Hindu-Buddhist temple stands on the shore of Lake Beratan and appears to float when the water is high. Early morning brings mist on the lake and far fewer visitors.
-
Stop at the twin lakes viewpoint
The ridge road looks down over Lake Buyan and Lake Tamblingan, with forest on every side. It is an easy stop on the drive to Munduk.
-
Walk to the Munduk waterfalls
Forest trails link several falls around the village. Paths get slippery after rain, so wear shoes with grip and ask which trails are open.
-
Taste coffee on a clove plantation
Cloves and coffee are the crops of these hills, and you will often smell the cloves drying by the roadside. Small farms offer a slow tasting and a look at how it is all grown.
How to get there.
Munduk is about 2 hours 30 minutes by car from Ubud, on winding mountain roads. It is a long way to go and return in one day, so a driver who knows the road makes a big difference, and an overnight stay is even better.

Munduk & Bedugul questions, answered.
Is Munduk worth visiting?
Yes, if you want cool air, waterfalls and quiet villages rather than beaches. It feels very different from southern Bali and is far less crowded than Ubud.
How cold does it get in Munduk and Bedugul?
The highlands are noticeably cooler than the coast, often around 18°C when the beaches are above 30°C. Bring a light jacket, especially for early mornings.
Can you visit Munduk as a day trip?
Yes, with an early start, but it is a long day of about five hours in the car from Ubud. Staying one night gives you a misty morning on the lakes and a much easier pace.
