Mount Bromo at sunrise

Mount Bromo travel guide

Mount Bromo: sunrise over a smoking volcano and a sea of sand.

Mount Bromo is an active volcano in East Java, inside the Tengger caldera and rising from a vast sea of sand. The classic visit is a pre-dawn jeep ride to a viewpoint for sunrise, followed by a walk to the crater rim. From Bali, allow at least two days, because the drive and ferry take most of a day each way.

Things to do in Mount Bromo.

  1. Watch sunrise from the Penanjakan ridge

A 4×4 takes you up before dawn for the view of Bromo, Batok and, on clear days, Semeru behind them. Viewpoints fill quickly, so an early start matters more than an early alarm.

  2. Cross the sea of sand

After sunrise, jeeps drop down onto the caldera floor, a wide plain of grey volcanic sand. It is one of the most unusual landscapes in Indonesia.

  3. Climb to the crater rim

A short walk and a long concrete stairway lead to the edge of the smoking crater. Bring a scarf or mask for dust and sulphur, and follow any exclusion zone in force.

  4. Combine it with Ijen

Ijen Crater lies on the way back towards Bali, so the two volcanoes pair naturally on a three-day overland route.

How to get there.

From Bali, drive to Gilimanuk, cross the Bali Strait by car ferry to Ketapang, then continue along Java to Cemoro Lawang on the caldera rim. Expect about 10 to 12 hours from Ubud, including the ferry. Most travellers sleep near the rim and leave for the viewpoint before 04:00.

Mount Bromo questions, answered.

Can you visit Mount Bromo from Bali?

Yes. It is an overland trip by car and ferry that takes about 10 to 12 hours each way from Ubud, so plan at least two days. Three days lets you add Ijen Crater on the return.

What is the best time to visit Mount Bromo?

May to October is the dry season and gives the best chance of a clear sunrise. Whenever you go, it is very cold before dawn at this altitude, so bring a proper jacket, gloves and a hat.

Is Mount Bromo safe to visit?

Bromo is an active volcano, and authorities can restrict access to the crater or close the park when activity rises or during ceremonies. Check the current status before you travel; we confirm it before your departure.
